Experts’ new book delves into the hidden dangers of legionella bacteria

New Book Explains More About Dangers Of Legionella Bacteria

LEADING health and safety experts Ian Stone and Neil Munro have launched a new book which delves into the hidden dangers of legionella bacteria.

Following the success of their two previous books, Asbestos: The Dark Arts and Fear and Loathing of Health and Safety, Ian and Neil, who are both directors of Acorn Safety Services, have launched their latest book, Legionella: The Dark Arts.

The book explains why anyone responsible for health and safety should take the threat of legionella bacteria seriously and outlines the steps those involved with facilities management need to take now to protect those around them.

Legionella Bacteria – what do you need to know?

Like all of Ian and Neil’s books, Legionella: The Dark Arts is essential reading for anyone who is a duty holder or responsible for health and safety.

Throughout the book, Ian and Neil offer helpful advice about the hidden dangers of legionella bacteria, which can exist – and thrive – in any water supply.

Where this does happen, people using the supply are at risk of inhaling or ingesting infected water droplets which can go on to cause Legionnaires Disease – a potentially fatal virus which is a particular risk for the elderly or those whose immune systems are compromised.

To ensure your water system is safe, regular water monitoring is a must.

How can Legionella: The Dark Arts help me?

Neil said: “The book is meant to be a comprehensive guide, detailing the risks associated with Legionnaires Disease within non-domestic premises in the UK.

“It will be an essential toolkit for all dutyholders, including business owners, building managers and other responsible people. It will help them to understand the A-Z of legionella bacteria, identify the possible risks in water management systems on their premises, enable them to seek information about the implementation of safety guidelines and lookout for new methods to improve safety checks.

“You can read the book cover to cover, flip through the relevant sections or use it as a reference guide as and when you need it – whatever works for you. At the back, you will also find sample recording sheets so you can monitor water temperature yourself and keep a close eye on any changes.”

I’m worried about legionella. What do I do next?

While the book will go a long way to helping you understand the theory behind legionella bacteria, there can be no substitute for regular water monitoring when it comes identifying any problems with your water supply.

In 2022, Acorn Safety Services launched a new legionella bacteria service to help clients manage legionella testing and water monitoring.

Carried out by our team of fully-trained experts, a full legionella bacteria risk assessment survey will look for any non-Water Regulations Approval Scheme approved fittings, assess your cold water tank and conditions in your hot water cylinder and accessibility to all areas that require monitoring and maintenance.

After the assessment, you will receive a full report which will include any advice about the work and repairs which might be required including legionella treatment remediation – a process which removes legionella bacteria from your water system, usually by using chlorine to kill the bacteria.

We also offer a free online portal where our clients can store their risk assessment documents safely and securely online ensuring they are fully accessible whenever you need them.
