Water Sampling
Here at Acorn Safety Services, we offer a comprehensive water sampling and legionella testing service to help you manage water quality and control legionella bacteria in your systems. Our team of legionella experts can provide you with legionella risk assessments, sampling plans, site surveys, laboratory testing and clear interpretation of results.
If you are responsible for the management of water systems, you must understand the risks from legionella and other waterborne bacteria and the potential for serious illness, including Legionnaires’ disease. Water sampling and legionella testing are vital to confirm that your control regime is working and that your water systems are not posing a risk to people’s health.
Where results indicate an issue, our team of experts can work with you to develop a practical remedial and control strategy. Our recommendations are tailored to each individual site and take into account the type of water system, the level of risk and the resources available.
Water sampling and testing are just one part of managing legionella and other water quality risks. Our team can also provide you with comprehensive training on all aspects of legionella control, result interpretation and ongoing monitoring, delivered on-site or at our training centre.
What is Water Sampling for Legionella?
Water sampling for legionella involves taking representative water samples, in sterilised bottles (with sodium thiosulphate where necessary), and sending them to a UKAS-accredited laboratory for analysis. The laboratory identifies the presence or absence of legionella bacteria in the water sample, along with the bacterial count (cfu/L) and, where required, the legionella species present.
As part of our service, we do not just hand over a lab report. We explain what the numbers mean in plain English, how they relate to HSE guidance and what actions, if any, are required.
Which water systems may require water sampling and legionella testing?
- Cooling water systems, cooling towers and evaporative condensers
- Hot and cold water systems
- Safety showers, sprinklers and vehicle wash systems
- Fountains and water features
- Spa pools and hot tubs
- Spray humidifiers, misters, air washers and wet scrubbers
- Any other system containing water in which legionella could grow and be released in aerosol droplets
Water Sampling & Testing Services
Water sampling and legionella testing should be undertaken when confirmation of the effectiveness of your control regime is needed, or where there is concern that legionella bacteria may be present.
You should consider water sampling and legionella testing when:
- A control regime’s limits, such as temperature or disinfectant concentration, are not always consistently achieved.
- There is a high-risk area or a place where there is a population with increased susceptibility, e.g. healthcare premises such as care homes.
- A water system is suspected or identified in a case or outbreak of legionellosis.
- A water system is being treated with biocides and hot water is stored or distributed at lower temperatures.
It is recommended that water sampling and legionella testing are only undertaken by competent persons who have had sufficient training and understand how to plan sampling and interpret results.

Interpretation of water sampling results in simple, easy-to-understand language.
Many laboratories simply send a report of numbers without any explanation. We specialise in controlling legionella and other waterborne pathogens and in explaining what your results actually mean. We will:
- Review your water sampling results against current HSE and industry guidance.
- Explain in plain English what the counts mean and whether action is required.
- Set out clear, prioritised recommendations to address any issues identified.
- Advise how results should influence your ongoing monitoring and control regime.
Our aim is to turn technical laboratory data into clear, practical actions so you can manage your water systems with confidence.

Water Sampling & Legionella Testing – Frequently Asked Questions
Below we’ve outlined some commonly asked questions about water sampling and legionella testing. Still got a question, contact us and request a call back from one of our legionella consultants.
What is legionella bacteria?
Legionella bacteria is a type of pathogenic bacterium that can cause Legionnaires’ disease, a severe and sometimes fatal form of pneumonia. Legionella is found in natural water sources as well as man-made water systems, such as cooling towers, evaporative condensers, humidifiers, hot tubs and showers.
How do you carry out water sampling for legionella?
When monitoring for legionella is required, water sampling should be carried out in accordance with BS 7592. If a biocide is used, it should be neutralised as soon as possible using an appropriate neutraliser in the sample bottle. Samples should then be sent promptly to a UKAS-accredited laboratory that participates in an appropriate proficiency testing scheme.
Our trained legionella experts will establish a sampling plan, agree locations, collect samples using sterile bottles and complete the necessary chain-of-custody paperwork before sending them to a UKAS-accredited laboratory for examination and analysis.
How much does water sampling and legionella testing cost?
This depends on the number of samples required, the type of systems on site, access and the collection process.

Who can you use for water sampling and legionella testing?
Water sampling may be carried out by a competent service provider, such as a water treatment company or consultant, or by the operator if they are trained and correctly supervised. Laboratory analysis should always be undertaken by a UKAS-accredited laboratory.
How often should I test for legionella in water?
The frequency of sampling is determined by the system you have and the recommendations set out within your legionella risk assessment. For open systems, such as cooling towers, evaporative condensers and spa pools, routine testing is typically carried out at least quarterly, though more frequent sampling may be required in some cases.
Microbiological testing is not usually required for hot and cold water systems where control measures are proven to be effective. If you are unsure about the effectiveness of your regime, or if recommended temperatures or disinfectant concentrations are not consistently met, additional legionella testing may be needed.
How do I interpret legionella water sampling results?
Water sampling results need to be interpreted in line with HSE guidance and your specific water systems. Factors include the legionella count, sample location, trend over time and any recent system changes. Our legionella consultants will review your results with you, explain what they mean in simple terms and set out clear next steps, whether that is no action, increased monitoring or remedial works.
